The holiday season is here, and you’re already shopping for gifts and traveling to visit family. What if every purchase you make AND every mile you drive could bring you closer to a magical Disney World vacation?

That’s exactly what we do at Points to Magic. Our family has turned regular holiday shopping AND holiday travel into thousands of dollars in Disney World vacation savings. Last year alone, we earned over $1,400 through strategic cashback stacking and point accumulation during the holiday shopping season… for shopping we were doing anyways. Why not let your holdiay spending pay for all your meals on your next Disney World vacation?

This isn’t about spending more money. It’s about being strategic with purchases and travel you’re already planning. Between Black Friday, Cyber Monday, holiday gift shopping, AND driving to family gatherings, November and December are the perfect months to accelerate your Disney fund.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to stack cashback apps to earn 15-25% back on holiday purchases
  • How to turn every gas fill-up into Disney money with Upside
  • How to earn 5-10% back on holiday hotel bookings through travel portals
  • Which credit cards maximize holiday spending for Disney trips
  • Strategic gift card purchases that triple your Disney savings
  • Real examples of how we funded our last Disney trip through holiday shopping and travel
  • Exact steps to turn holiday spending in Disney money

Why Holiday Shopping & Travel Are Your Disney Trip Goldmine

The average American family spends $2,000-$3,500 on holiday shopping between November and December. Add in holiday travel – gas, hotels, and dining out – and that number jumps to $4,000-$5,000. Most people pay full price and walk away with nothing but gifts and family memories.

We pay the same prices (or less), get the same gifts, make the same family visits, and walk away with enough points and cashback to fund a Disney vacation.

Add in credit card welcome bonuses we earned during the same period, and your holiday shopping season can generate a ton of money for a Disney World trip.

The 3-Step Holiday Shopping Strategy That Funds Disney Trips

Step 1: Start Every Purchase with Cashback Apps

Before you buy anything this holiday season, check Rakuten and TopCashback. These two cashback apps work with over 5,000 retailers and often offer elevated rates during the holidays.

Rakuten for Holiday Shopping

Rakuten partners with virtually every major retailer and regularly boosts cashback rates during the holiday season. We’ve seen rates as high as 10% at Target, 12% at Best Buy, and 15% at Macy’s during Black Friday.

The secret weapon? Link your Rakuten account to earn American Express Membership Rewards points instead of cashback. Amex points transfer to hotel partners like Marriott and Hilton, meaning your holiday shopping directly funds your Disney area hotel stay.

Rakuten cash back savings can earn Amex points that you can use towards a free Disney trip

Real Example: We spent $1,200 on holiday gifts through Rakuten last November. At an average of 6% back in Amex points, we earned 7,200 Membership Rewards points. Those transferred to Marriott Bonvoy at a 1:1 ratio, giving us 7,200 Marriott points. That is in addition to the points we earned on our credit card for the actual $1,200 in spending.

TopCashback – Two Ways to Save

TopCashback works differently from Rakuten because it offers TWO distinct earning methods:

Method 1: Shopping Portal (Like Rakuten) Click through TopCashback’s retailer links before shopping online at stores like CVS, Home Depot, Walmart, and thousands of others. You’ll earn cashback on your purchases just like with Rakuten.

Important: Some retailers don’t award cashback if you pay with a gift card. Always check the store’s terms on TopCashback before purchasing.

Method 2: TopGiftCards Section (The Game-Changer) This is where TopCashback shines for Disney planning. In the TopGiftCards section, you can purchase digital gift cards and earn cashback on the card value itself—not when you spend it later.

Real Example: We bought a $100 Disney gift card through TopGiftCards and earned $5.67 back immediately. We then used that Disney gift card for park tickets. Recently, TopCashback was offering 5-7% back on Disney gift cards through TopGiftCards.

Holiday Shopping Strategy:

  • Buy gift cards through TopGiftCards for stores where you’ll do holiday shopping (Target, Petco, Disney, Home Depot, CVS)
  • Earn cashback on the gift card purchase immediately
  • Use those gift cards for your actual shopping
  • When you cash out your TopCashback earnings, choose Disney gift cards for an additional bonus

Real Holiday Example: We bought $119.75 in Petco gift cards through TopGiftCards, earning $13.80 in cashback instantly. Then we used those Petco gift cards to buy dog supplies (which we needed anyway). We let the $13.80 accumulate with other cashback and eventually cashed out to Disney gift cards with the 4% bonus.

Pro Strategy:

  • Use TopCashback’s shopping portal when you’re paying with a credit card directly
  • Use TopGiftCards when you know you’ll spend the full card value
  • Always compare Rakuten vs TopCashback portal rates before clicking through

Step 2: Maximize Credit Card Category Bonuses

Holiday shopping is the perfect time to maximize credit card bonus categories. Instead of using the same card for everything, match each purchase to the card that earns the most points in that category.

The Strategy: Before every purchase, ask yourself: “Which of my cards gives bonus points for this type of spending?”

Common bonus categories during holiday shopping:

  • Grocery stores (including gift card purchases)
  • Restaurants and dining
  • Gas stations
  • Online shopping
  • Department stores

Why This Matters: Using a card with a bonus category can earn you 4-6x points instead of the standard 1x points. On $2,000 in holiday spending, that’s the difference between earning 2,000 points and 10,000 points.

Pro Tip: Keep a note in your phone listing which card earns the most in each category. Before checkout, quickly reference it to ensure you’re using the optimal card.

The Gift Card Strategy That Changes Everything

Here’s one of our favorite strategies during the holidays: buying gift cards at grocery stores that fall into credit card bonus categories.

Many premium credit cards offer 4-6x points on grocery purchases. The gift card section at your local grocery store includes Amazon, Target, Home Depot, and hundreds of other retailers you’re already shopping at for holiday gifts.

earn extra travel rewards points by buying gift cards at your local grocery store with cards that have supermarkets as bonus categories

Real Example: Lets be real… a lot of our holiday shopping happens on Amazon. We always buy Amazon gift cards at at our local grocery store using the Amex Hilton Surpass card (6x Hilton points on groceries). That generates Hilton points at a faster rate for our Amazon buys. We then used those gift cards for our regular Amazon shopping, effectively earning bonus points on purchases that normally wouldn’t qualify. We do this all year round… not just during the holiday season.

Step 3: Stack Everything (This Is Where Magic Happens)

The real power comes from combining multiple earning methods. Here are the two main stacking approaches:

Strategy A: Cashback Portal + Credit Card Points

  1. Start at Rakuten or TopCashback – Click through to the retailer (3-12% back)
  2. Pay with a category-bonus credit card – Earn 4-6x points on the purchase
  3. Shop during sales – Combine with Black Friday/Cyber Monday discounts
  4. Result: Portal cashback + credit card points + retail discount

Strategy B: Pre-Purchase Gift Cards + Use for Shopping

  1. Buy gift cards through TopCashback’s TopGiftCards – Earn 5-7% instant cashback on the card purchase
  2. OR buy discounted gift cards at warehouse clubs or grocery stores – Sam’s Club/BJ’s often sell Disney and retail gift cards at 5-10% off
  3. Use those gift cards for holiday shopping – During sales for additional savings
  4. Result: Gift card cashback/discount + retail discount

Important: You typically can’t combine Strategy A and B on the same purchase. Most retailers won’t award cashback portal earnings if you pay with a gift card. Choose the strategy that gives you the highest total return for each purchase.

Best Credit Cards for Holiday Shopping → Disney Trips

Not all credit cards are created equal during the holiday season. Here are the ones we use and recommend:

Important: We only recommend credit cards that earn transferable points or hotel/airline points—never cashback cards. Why? Points can be redeemed for significantly higher value when transferred to travel partners or used for hotel stays. Cashback is limited to 1-2 cents per dollar, while points can be worth 2-10 cents per point when used strategically for Disney area hotels and flights.

Don’t Forget Holiday Travel – Turn Your Family Visits Into Disney Funds

The holidays aren’t just about shopping – you’re also traveling to visit family, booking hotels for relatives, and filling up the gas tank multiple times. These travel expenses are a goldmine for earning Disney money.

Gas Savings with Upside

If you’re driving to family gatherings this holiday season, Upside should be your first stop before every fill-up.

How Upside Works:

  • Claim offers in the app BEFORE you pump gas (this is critical!)
  • Earn 5-25¢ per gallon cashback at participating stations
  • Stack with your gas bonus credit card for double rewards
  • Also works at restaurants for holiday dining out

Real Holiday Example: Last Thanksgiving, we drove from New York to visit family in Pennsylvania – about 600 miles round trip. We filled up three times through Upside, earning an average of 18¢/gallon back. That’s $10.80 in cashback just from holiday travel we were doing anyway.

The Stacking Strategy:

  1. Open Upside app and claim the gas station offer
  2. Fill up your tank
  3. Pay with a credit card that earns bonus points on gas (like Amex Hilton Surpass – 6x points)
  4. Earn both Upside cashback AND credit card bonus points on the same purchase

November-December Gas Potential: If you’re like most families and fill up 6-8 times during the holiday season (regular commuting + holiday travel), that’s $15-$25 in Upside cashback that goes straight to your Disney fund.

Download Upside for an extra 15¢/gal bonus on your first fill-up.
